
The White House, now a symbol of power, wasn’t always seen that way. When construction was completed in 1800, the building, originally referred to as the “President’s House,” failed to impress. It was a plain, boxy structure sitting on barren land, far from the grandeur many might have expected from the residence of the leader of the United States.
At the time, both Americans and foreign visitors were underwhelmed by the final product. There was nothing about the building that suggested it would eventually become the world-renowned and powerful address it is today.
