Vice President JD Vance didn’t hold back in his candid remarks about President Donald Trump’s historic speech before Congress. Caught on a hot mic talking to House Speaker Mike Johnson, Vance acknowledged that while the speech would be compelling, he was surprised by its length. He remarked, “I think the speech is going to be great, but I don’t know how you do this for 90 minutes.”

Speaker Johnson, taking the opportunity to throw shade at the previous administration, responded with a jab at President Biden. He said, “The hardest thing was doing it during Biden when the speech was a stupid campaign speech,” joking about the nature of Biden’s addresses.
Trump’s speech, which lasted one hour and 40 minutes, set a new record for the longest presidential address to Congress, surpassing Bill Clinton’s 1997 record of one hour and 28 minutes. The American Presidency Project confirmed that Trump now holds the title for the longest speech ever delivered by a sitting president.

Despite the historic nature of Trump’s address, viewership was lower than during his first term. Approximately 36.6 million viewers tuned in, marking a decline compared to previous years. However, those who watched gave largely favorable feedback, with many approving of his performance.

A CBS News/YouGov poll taken right after the speech showed overwhelming approval, with 76 percent of viewers praising Trump’s remarks. The speech was described as “presidential,” “inspiring,” and even “entertaining,” with many noting it was more unifying than divisive. The behind-the-scenes conversations in Washington, including Vance’s hot-mic moment, continue to add intrigue to the political landscape.
