Despite a £300,000 annual salary, Pope Francis passed away with less than £100 in personal wealth. Known for his humble lifestyle, he shunned the opulence that typically accompanies the papacy. Instead of residing in the lavish Papal residence, he chose to live at the Casa Santa Marta, a guesthouse typically used by visitors.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was committed to the Jesuit values of poverty, chastity, and obedience. He donated much of his salary to charitable causes, reflecting his dedication to helping the poor. His frugal nature extended beyond his personal wealth; in 2019, he controversially donated the Palazzo building to house Rome’s homeless.
While some speculated that his assets could be valued at £16 million, his refusal of luxury and the salary led him to live modestly. His final net worth remains unclear, but it is widely accepted that he left behind very little. Pope Francis was inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi, adopting his papal name to honor the “Poor Man of Assisi” and his mission to serve the less fortunate.
