President Donald Trump shared the contents of the letter that former President Joe Biden left for him in the Oval Office before departing the White House, revealing it exclusively to Fox News on Wednesday. The note was discovered inside the Resolute Desk while Trump was signing a series of executive orders. With the help of Fox News’ senior White House correspondent Peter Doocy, Trump found the envelope addressed to “47,” a reference to Trump’s position as the 47th President.

The letter, dated January 20, 2025, began with a formal greeting: “Dear President Trump.” In it, Biden wished Trump and his family all the best for the coming four years, expressing hope for prosperity, peace, and grace in the nation. He also acknowledged the responsibility of the presidency, stating that people both in America and worldwide look to the White House for steadiness in difficult times. Biden concluded by praying for guidance and blessings for Trump and the country, signing the note simply as “Joe Biden.”

Trump discovered the letter on Monday after Doocy asked whether Biden had continued the tradition of leaving a note for the incoming president. Trump, unsure at first, found the envelope inside the desk and, smiling, thanked Doocy for helping them locate it. The discovery was significant, as Trump had not known about the note’s existence until then.

The following day, Trump provided further insight into the tone of the letter, describing it as “very nice” and “encouraging.” He explained that the letter’s message was one of inspiration, urging him to “enjoy it” and “do a good job.” Trump seemed to appreciate the gesture, acknowledging the significance of the letter and expressing his gratitude for it.

The tradition of outgoing presidents leaving letters for their successors dates back to 1989 when President Ronald Reagan wrote a message for George H.W. Bush. Each president since—Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Trump, and Biden—has maintained this practice. Biden’s position was unique, as he became the first president to write a letter to someone who had previously written one to him. Meanwhile, Trump became the first president since Grover Cleveland to serve two nonconsecutive terms. Although Trump has now made Biden’s letter public, Biden has chosen to keep the contents of Trump’s letter from 2021 private, describing it as “very generous.”
