Phoenix Ikner, 20, has been identified as the shooter in Thursday’s mass shooting at Florida State University in Tallahassee. He killed two people and injured six others before being shot and hospitalized. Authorities say Ikner used a gun owned by his mother, Deputy Jessica Ikner of the Leon County Sheriff’s Office.
Ikner, a political science major, was involved in local law enforcement youth programs and was familiar with police. Before the attack, he posted a disturbing Bible verse on social media and had recently mocked student protests about the 2024 election, dismissing calls for revolt.
Witnesses described chaos as gunfire rang out, with students running and hiding in classrooms. The campus was locked down, and nearby schools increased security. Police found multiple weapons at the scene, which remains an active crime investigation site. Classes were canceled for the day, and the FBI is assisting with the investigation.
Governor Ron DeSantis and former President Trump released statements on the shooting. Six victims are hospitalized, with one in critical condition. FSU, which has about 45,000 students, previously experienced a shooting in 2014 at the Strozier Library.
