U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee Chair Gene Sykes recently shared that he has received “significant reassurances” that Donald Trump’s proposed travel restrictions won’t prevent athletes from attending the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
In March, the Trump administration floated the idea of broad travel bans affecting countries like Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, and Cuba. These proposals, along with reports of detainment and deportation, led some countries to issue travel warnings for the U.S.
Sykes said discussions with officials in Washington, D.C., brought strong support and excitement for the L.A. Games, with the administration emphasizing its commitment to ensuring a successful and inclusive event for athletes from around the world. He added that efforts would be made to manage the visa process effectively.
Another potential challenge is Trump’s executive order barring transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports, which may affect entry to the U.S. for some athletes. Sykes reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to protecting fair and inclusive participation in sport.
