Pope Francis died this morning, April 21, at age 87, after battling pneumonia since February. His final public appearance was on Easter Sunday, where he greeted crowds despite his illness.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance was among the last to meet him. Their discussion came amid tensions between the Vatican and the Trump administration over immigration and foreign aid but was described as cordial.
Vance expressed condolences on X, saying he was glad to have seen the Pope one last time and shared a memory of a touching homily Francis gave during COVID-19.
