Former President Donald Trump reaffirmed his commitment to tariffs, claiming they have led to “tremendous progress” in trade negotiations. Speaking at the White House alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said countries that once took advantage of the U.S. are now seeking fairer trade deals, thanks to his tough economic stance.
The press conference came amid sharp drops in global markets, including the FTSE 100 and S&P 500. Trump defended the tariffs as essential for restoring balance in international trade and reviving U.S. manufacturing, pointing to the closure of tens of thousands of factories since the mid-1990s. He blamed countries like China for the trade imbalance and connected their surplus to America’s $36 trillion national debt.
Despite current economic strains, Trump expressed confidence in future negotiations, saying other nations are now more willing to work toward fairer agreements. Netanyahu echoed the sentiment, calling their meeting productive and pledging to strengthen U.S.-Israel economic ties.
