Donald Trump has claimed that there may be a “loophole” that could allow him to serve a third term as president in 2028, insisting that he’s serious about the idea. Speaking to NBC’s Kristen Welker, Trump stated that he is exploring possible methods to bypass the constitutional limit of two presidential terms. While the U.S. Constitution typically restricts presidents to two terms, Trump suggested that there might be ways for him to circumvent this rule, although he didn’t go into specifics.
One possible strategy he mentioned involved his Vice President, JD Vance, running for president. If Vance won, he could then appoint Trump as his VP, and upon resigning, Trump could potentially regain control of the Oval Office. Trump did not elaborate on other methods but hinted that there are additional options. Despite these claims, Trump emphasized that it is still early in his current administration and he is focused on the present rather than future plans.
Trump has previously teased the idea of running for a third term, mentioning it during private Republican meetings and at a National Rifle Association event. While he expressed a desire to continue working in the White House until 2033, he also acknowledged that it’s too early to seriously consider his potential third run.
