Prince William’s choice of attire at Pope Francis’ funeral drew criticism online. Attending alongside world leaders like Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron, William wore a blue suit with a black tie instead of the traditional black suit, leaving some royal watchers unimpressed. Trump also wore a blue suit, while Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy opted for black military attire.
Many on social media questioned William’s decision, noting that royals are usually strict with protocol. However, supporters defended him, pointing out that the funeral’s official dress code simply required a “dark suit” with a black tie and black lapel button. They also noted that, as a member of the Church of England, William’s blue suit was appropriate.

Trump’s attire also sparked backlash, with critics saying he showed a lack of respect by not adhering more closely to traditional mourning dress. Meanwhile, women attending the funeral were required to wear long black dresses, gloves, and veils.
Pope Francis had requested a simple funeral and burial. He was laid to rest in a plain wooden coffin lined with zinc and transported through Rome to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major. As per his wishes, his tomb will bear the simple inscription “Franciscus,” honoring his namesake, St. Francis of Assisi.
