Spanish matador Iván Fandiño tragically lost his life in 2017 after being gored by a bull during a festival in Aire-sur-l’Adour, located in southwest France. The 36-year-old, an experienced bullfighter, stumbled over his cape during the fight, which allowed the bull to strike him severely in the torso, injuring his lungs and vital organs.
Although Fandiño remained conscious and was carried out of the arena, he suffered a fatal heart attack on the way to the hospital. His reported final words were, “Hurry up, I’m dying.” Known for facing dangerous bulls, Fandiño had survived previous injuries, but this incident shocked the bullfighting community, as it was the first matador death in France in almost 100 years.
Fandiño’s death came shortly after the fatal goring of Spanish matador Víctor Barrio in 2016. Despite the controversies surrounding the sport, bullfighting remains legal in parts of Spain and France, though animal rights activists continue to demand its ban.
