Wade Seago of Samson, Alabama, was startled when his dog, Cruiser, began barking at something outside. Seago, accustomed to wildlife like deer and raccoons, didn’t think much of it at first. However, when his daughter started screaming, he rushed to see what was happening. To his surprise, he found an 820-pound feral hog standing just yards from his front porch.
The hog, with tusk-like teeth about 6 inches long, posed a potential threat to Seago’s family and dog, so he quickly grabbed his .38 caliber revolver. After positioning himself, he fired three shots before the hog finally fell. The next day, Seago weighed the hog at a local peanut company, discovering it weighed an astounding 820 pounds.

Seago, who runs a taxidermy business and hunts deer recreationally, was shocked by the size of the hog. Wild hogs are common in Alabama but rarely grow to such large sizes. These feral hogs are considered an invasive species and cause significant agricultural damage in the state, with an estimated $800 million in yearly losses.
Seago decided to preserve the hog’s head and shoulders for display at his taxidermy shop, though he didn’t trust the meat due to the humidity. He had no regrets about shooting the hog, emphasizing that he would do it again if it meant protecting his family. Alabama law allows hunters to kill as many hogs as they want on private property to control the growing population.
