If you’ve ever noticed strange light patches or discoloration on your underwear after washing them, you’re not alone. Many women experience this, but the cause is often misunderstood.
The real reason behind these light patches isn’t your detergent or washing machine—it’s your body. According to a gynecologist known as “The Vag Doc” on TikTok, the “bleaching” effect is caused by the acidity of vaginal discharge.
The vagina maintains a healthy balance of bacteria, primarily lactobacilli, which creates an acidic environment that helps prevent infections. This acidity can strip the dye from your underwear, leaving light patches over time.

This “bleaching” effect is completely normal and usually means your vaginal pH is in a healthy range. There’s no need to worry, as it’s just a natural process.
If your underwear doesn’t show signs of bleaching, that’s fine too. Some women naturally have less acidic discharge, which is also normal. The type of fabric or dye in your underwear can also affect whether you notice the bleaching.
However, if you notice unusual changes in your discharge, such as a strong odor, different color, or change in texture, it’s a good idea to consult a doctor as it could indicate an infection or other health issue.
