Retired NYPD Detective Daniel Sprague was punched in the face during his birthday celebration after a woman took issue with his red “Make Fifty Great Again” hat. The hat, a birthday gift from his wife, was paired with a shirt that featured the American flag and the phrase “Making America Great Since 1970.” Sprague was enjoying the evening at The Stage on Broadway when the woman approached him, grabbed his hat, and struck him.
Sprague recalled the incident, stating that while he was outside with friends, someone suddenly grabbed him from behind, spun him around, and punched him in the face. Initially, he thought it was a friend playing around, but he was shocked when the punch landed. He couldn’t understand why someone would react so violently. Both he and the woman were removed from the venue, and although Sprague didn’t call the police immediately, he later filed a report with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.

According to the police report, the woman grabbed Sprague’s hat and punched him, but he did not retaliate. Despite some negative reactions to his hat throughout the night, Sprague said none of them had been violent. He mentioned that people had given him thumbs up, smiled at him, or expressed anger, but none of them physically confronted him. He emphasized that while he supported Trump, he respected other people’s opinions and would not resort to violence, even if someone wore a Bernie Sanders hat.
Sprague later shared his story on Facebook, posting pictures of his bloodied face and mentioning that he was waiting for updates from the Nashville detectives. However, he eventually deleted the post. Despite the attack, he remained firm in his belief that everyone should be entitled to their opinion, noting that he would never physically confront someone based on political differences.
