Dr. Billy Earl Dade Middle School in Dallas hosts an annual “Breakfast with Dads” event to help students, many from challenging backgrounds, connect with father figures. This year, some students didn’t have fathers or mentors to invite, so organizer Kristina Dove turned to Facebook to find volunteers, aiming for 50 men. The post went viral, attracting 600 volunteers.
Among the volunteers was Archie Nettles, a motivational speaker and Army veteran, who felt it was important to support boys lacking father figures. The event included an activity where the men taught the boys how to tie neckties, creating a positive experience. The students were excited to meet the volunteers and one expressed gratitude for gaining a mentor.
Dove and her team are working to keep these men involved in community efforts and hope to inspire similar initiatives in other cities. They aim to show South Dallas students they are valued and that their circumstances don’t define their potential.
