Emma, a 38-year-old mother, reached out online seeking advice on her parenting approach. She shared her experience of growing up with strict, authoritarian parents, which led to anxiety and strained relationships. Emma decided to break the cycle and raise her 8-year-old son, Georgie, with a nurturing and understanding style, prioritizing love, respect, and open communication.
Emma explained, “It’s important to find a balance between discipline and understanding in raising children.” She wanted to create a positive environment for Georgie, one that she never had. However, her husband disagrees, believing that Georgie should understand social norms and consequences.
One of Emma’s core beliefs is not forcing Georgie to apologize or say “thank you” and “please” if he doesn’t genuinely feel it. She explained, “When we make kids say sorry, even if they don’t really mean it, we’re teaching them to be fake.” She believes forced apologies can create adults who struggle with their own feelings and often try to please others.
Recently, Emma faced criticism at the playground when Georgie pushed another child. Instead of forcing Georgie to apologize, Emma apologized to the child herself, believing Georgie would learn by example. The other child’s mother called her “a bad and irresponsible mother” for not making Georgie apologize. This incident worsened the disagreement between Emma and her husband.
Despite positive results from her parenting style, Emma continues to face criticism from family and friends. She said, “Some people might use force to control what their child does, all to protect their own reputation.” Emma remains confident in her approach but hopes to find advice on how to navigate the challenges and criticism she faces.
