Cardinal Robert Prevost, the first-ever American pope, has caused a stir with his voting history, revealed to include participation in Republican primaries and general elections. Although he is a registered Republican, his political views don’t align with those of former President Donald Trump. Prevost has been critical of Trump’s policies, particularly on immigration, and has supported progressive causes, including DACA and immigrant rights.
Prevost, who chose the papal name Pope Leo XIV, has lived abroad for much of his career, but when in the U.S., he participated in elections. He did not vote in the 2016 or 2020 presidential elections but cast a vote in the 2024 race. Despite his Republican registration, he has often expressed disapproval of Trump’s administration, especially on immigration matters.
Pope Leo XIV, a former naturalized citizen of Peru, spent most of his career in Latin America and has been an advocate for social justice issues. His election as pope on May 8, 2025, was marked by the rising of white smoke from the Sistine Chapel, signaling the cardinals’ decision.
