Passengers aboard the Queen Anne cruise ship were taken aback when the captain announced increased security measures while sailing through the Sulu-Celebes Sea, a region notorious for piracy.
The ship, on a 111-night journey from Germany to the Philippines, enacted safety protocols such as shutting down promenade decks at night, dimming exterior lights, and requesting guests to draw their curtains and turn off lights in their cabins.
A TikTok video capturing the captain’s announcement quickly went viral, sparking mixed responses—some viewers expressed concern, while others noted this is standard safety procedure in areas known for pirate activity.
A Cunard spokesperson clarified that there was no direct threat, and the guest experience remained uninterrupted. While such incidents are uncommon, these kinds of precautions are typical near high-risk maritime zones, where pirates usually target cargo or oil ships rather than cruise liners.
